Locator: Home > Archive FAQ > 4.2 What is the HPUX.Install file?

The HPUX.Install file is written by the person who put the software package on the archive and it usually describes the steps taken by the porter to configure and compile the code on their system. It also (usually) describes the steps you must take to configure and compile the code to run on your system.

If the information you need is not in this file, try the README*, INSTALL, and Makefile files for additional hints on configuring and compiling the package.

Please note that compiling and installing software packages frequently requires far more support from a system than simply installing a pre-compiled binary package. It may well be necessary to install additional tools or upgrade/patch the system so that the software will compile properly. The Centre is very careful to keep their machines up-to-date and they already have all of the required software tools necessary to build and install the software on the archive.
