This archive contains the source code for two Public Domain programs named "fractile" and "crystile" which generate background images for use with Netscape or as wallpaper for Microsoft Windows or X terminals. "fractile" uses fractal techniques to generate an altitude map, and then derives an image from that altitude map. "crystile" simulates growing crystals and derives an image from the result. Both of them have loads of options, giving you a lot of control over the image produced. Examples are provided for producing images that look like everything from a satellite photo to a wall. The image will be written to a file in either Compuserve's GIF format, or Microsoft's BMP format. If compiled with X-windows support enabled, "fractile" can also write the image directly to the root window of your X terminal. These programs were developed and tested under Linux, but they should work with very few changes on any UNIX system. They also work with Microsoft's Visual C++ 2.0. The "fractile.man" and "crystile.man" files contain the documentation. They are meant to be processed by "troff -man fractile.man" or the equivalent. For those of you who don't have a troff or nroff clone, the files "fractile.txt" and "crystile.txt" contain plain-text versions of the documentation. The "examples.html" file is a small example of a Web page which uses "wall.gif" as a Netscape background image, and displays a variety of examples as inline graphics. You'll need to run "makegif.bat" before reading that page. These programs are offered without any warranty or support, blah blah blah...
